There are many beautiful and special windmills in the area around the Kagerplassen.

Windmills

Mills are part of the polder landscape. For centuries they regulated the water level in the polders. Other mills ground the grain into flour and supplied the raw materials for our food. The Rijnland Water Board still uses windmills, although they are often assisted by electrical colleagues and nowadays also by modern, small windmills. The municipality of Kaag en Braassem is currently - i.e. a merger in which Kinderdijk is involved - the Dutch municipality with the largest number of wind turbines. Mills come in many types, sizes and types and are named for their specific characteristics. The seesaw mill, which is most common in wetland areas, is the oldest type of water mill. If the mill is painted red, then the polder council was Roman Catholic at the time of its foundation. Green seesaw mills indicate a Protestant polder administration. Googher mill

On the Ringvaart between Oude Wetering and Nieuwe Wetering. This mill with thatched roof dates from 1715, is of the ground sailor type and serves as a polder mill. Completely destroyed by fire in 1833, but rebuilt because of its then indispensable function. Owned by the Molenstichting since 1972. Address: Googhermolenweg 1, Roelofarendsveen

Lady Venne mill

In 1632, “the Lady Venne” was built on the spot where it still stands today, together with a “verlaet” - a lock that bridges the level between the lower polder on the one hand and the higher canal on the other. Rebuilt in 1835, put back into use in May 1998 after restoration. Address: Leidseweg, Oud Ade

Peat mill

Located on the Wijde Aa. In the stone substructure there is a stone with the inscription “Stone located on July 6, 1830”. The superstructure dates from 1934. Like all mills in this area, the Veendermolen is a ground sailor that functions as a polder mill. Owned by the Polder Foundation since 1978. Address: Aderweg 2, Roelofarendsveen

Ghost mill

Overlooks the Braassemermeer. The “beard” of the mill shows that it was built in 1833: a ground sailor that served as a polder mill. The Mill Foundation attaches a very high value to the Geestmolen. The mill is well maintained. At the back, the wooden hull is covered with reeds, just like the hood. Address: Heiligegeestlaan, Leimuiden
